As the short Winter days close in on us, check out these locations just a few hours away from KC while the weather is still nice!

Hermann, MO

It's easy to dismiss the local wine scene in the Midwest, but Hermann should be a destination for every wine lover in Kansas City. You could visit a different winery every day for a week and barely travel outside the city limits.

To work off the wine you'll certainly enjoy, there are numerous historical buildings and bicycle trails to explore. Katy Trail, a 240 mile trail popular with bicyclists, is just 3 miles away from Hermann. There are plenty of cheap bike rentals so you don't have to lug your own gear to the town as well.

Eureka Springs, MO

Hosting a wildlife refuge, a giant statue of Jesus, a bustling downtown and more than enough water to boat, raft or canoe, Eureka Springs is a small-town destination with big-city entertainment. We highly recommend the Thorncrown Chapel, it's a building with a fascinating design nestled just outside of town.

If you have kids whose eyes will glaze over if you mention "architecture," the tigers, lions and bears in the wildlife refuge will surely get their attention! Housing over 100 animals, the refuge is a haven for neglected big cats as well as other animals without a home. The facility offers guided tours and has passionate staff eager to educate the public.

With more camping spots to shake a stick at and an off road/RV park just south of the city, Eureka Springs is a killer city for any outdoor enthusiast.

Clinton and Butler, MO

As Clinton and Butler are only 30 miles away from each other we decided to include them as a single destination. Despite being so close, the towns have very different attractions. Clinton is great for a quiet weekend with museums and antique shops. If sipping a coffee and learning about American history sounds like an enjoyable Sunday morning, Clinton is a solid choice.

On the other hand, Butler's main attraction is a skydiving facility with great ratings and is perfect for beginners. Both day trips should be nice ways to spend the weekend no matter how much adrenaline you enjoy!

Grafton, IL

While the water park is the big draw to Grafton, we don't imagine many of you will want to break out your swimsuits this time of year! But even without the park, Grafton has more than enough to keep visitors entertained. For the thrill seekers we hear the ziplining is excellent!

If you just want to take in the sights, the Pere Marquette State Park is great in the fall as the leaves change to announce the end of the year and has well-marked trails to see them.

Davenport, IA

The furthest drive on our list at 5 hours, Davenport is a part of the "Quad Cities" on the Iowa side. There are plenty of activities to enjoy in Davenport, but those that enjoy art and learning are going to have a particularly great time at the Figge Art Museum, Putnam Museum & Science Center.

If your interests lie elsewhere, the Skybridge is beautiful at night and there are plenty of breweries. But if you have any young kids you need to entertain, take them to the Rock Island Arsenal Museum. Seeing a literal wall of weapons will ensure your kids' mouths will drop.
