2026 Cars Without CVTs
While some manufacturers did have early examples of CVTs (Continuous Variable Transmission) that were killed off, currently CVTs are becoming more popular than ever and few if any cars are changing their transmissions back to traditional automatics from CVTs.
What is a CVT?
A CVT (or continuously variable transmission) is an automatic transmission found in many vehicles. A CVT does not have a fixed number of gears and using belts and pulleys, can change between an almost infinite number of gear ratios.
Despite their pros, some CVTs have poor reputations for reliability or driving smoothness, opting for potential buyers to avoid them.
If you want to avoid a CVT for any reason, here are the 2026 models that are not equipped with the transmission.
Acura: Only the entry-level Integra (excluding the manual Type S) utilizes a CVT. The rest of the Acura lineup uses traditional automatic or dual-clutch transmissions.
Audi: No modern Audi is equipped with a CVT.
Alfa Romeo: No modern Alfa Romeo is equipped with a CVT.
BMW: No modern BMW is equipped with a CVT.
Buick: The Encore GX uses a CVT on front-wheel-drive (FWD) models, but switches to a traditional 9-speed automatic if you opt for All-Wheel Drive (AWD). The Envista utilizes a traditional 6-speed automatic. The Envision and Enclave use traditional 9-speed automatics.
Cadillac: No modern Cadillac is equipped with a CVT.
Chevrolet: The compact Trailblazer uses a CVT on FWD models, but switches to a traditional 9-speed automatic if you opt for AWD. The Blazer, Equinox, Tahoe, Suburban, Traverse, Trax, Colorado, and all Silverado trucks are completely free of CVTs.
Chrysler / Dodge / Jeep / RAM (Stellantis): Across all four brands, no modern vehicles are equipped with a CVT. They primarily utilize traditional 8-speed and 9-speed automatic transmissions.
Fiat: No modern Fiat is equipped with a CVT.
Ford: The Maverick Hybrid and Escape Hybrid use electronic CVTs (eCVTs) to manage their hybrid systems.
Every gas-powered Ford vehicle-including the Explorer, Expedition, Edge, Mustang, and their entire truck lineup (F-150, Ranger, Super Duty)-uses a traditional automatic transmission.
Genesis: No modern Genesis is equipped with a CVT.
GMC: No modern GMC is equipped with a CVT.
Honda: The high-performance Civic Type R, alongside the Passport, Pilot, Ridgeline, and Odyssey, do not use CVTs. All standard gas-powered Civic and Accord models, as well as the HR-V and CR-V, utilize CVTs or eCVTs.
Hyundai: The Sonata, Palisade, Santa Fe, and Tucson are not equipped with CVTs.
Infiniti: The QX30, QX60, Q50, Q60 and QX80 are not equipped with CVTs.
Jaguar / Land Rover: No modern Jaguar or Land Rover is equipped with a CVT.
Kia: The K5 (which replaced the Optima), Sportage, Sorento, Telluride, and the Carnival multi-purpose vehicle are not equipped with CVTs.
Lamborghini: No modern Lamborghini is equipped with a CVT.
Lexus: Every non-hybrid Lexus is free of a CVT. Performance hybrids like the LC 500h use a unique multi-stage hybrid transmission, but standard luxury hybrids in their lineup rely on electronic CVTs (eCVTs).
Lincoln: The Aviator, Navigator, and non-hybrid versions of the Corsair and Nautilus use traditional automatic gearboxes.
Maserati: No modern Maserati is equipped with a CVT.
Mazda: No modern Mazda is equipped with a CVT.
Mercedes-Benz: No modern Mercedes is equipped with a CVT.
Mini: No modern Mini is equipped with a CVT.
Mitsubishi: The vast majority of the Mitsubishi lineup relies on CVTs. The only way to avoid one is by purchasing the Outlander PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid), which utilizes a direct-drive setup.
Nissan: Known historically for its use of CVTs, Nissan offers a few notable exceptions: the Nissan Z sports car, the GT-R, and the Armada and Frontier trucks all use traditional automatic or manual transmissions.
Porsche: No modern Porsche is equipped with a CVT.
Subaru: Subaru is heavily reliant on CVTs. For 2026, the only models you can buy without a CVT are the manual-transmission equipped BRZ sports car and the high-performance WRX (when equipped with the 6-speed manual). Standard Impreza, Crosstrek, Outback, and Forester models are strictly CVT.
Tesla: No modern Tesla is equipped with a CVT.
Toyota: The Camry is now exclusively a hybrid vehicle, meaning every brand-new Camry is equipped with an electronic CVT (eCVT).
To avoid a CVT in a 2026 Toyota, you must look to their non-hybrid gas models or specific trucks, including the Supra, GR86, GR Corolla, 4Runner, Highlander (non-hybrid), RAV4 (non-hybrid), Tacoma, Tundra, and Sequoia.
Volkswagen: No modern Volkswagen is equipped with a CVT.
